Easter Egg and Bunny Pin Children's Craft

I needed a unique craft for the kids at the library craft group that I run, something simple for children of all ages to do, and something that only takes an hour or less to make. I came up with this cute craft idea for Easter Egg brooches that make great gifts for mother or grandmother! I still wear mine three years later, so they are very hardy too.

Makes 2 pins.

Supplies:
1 Styrofoam egg. I used the 1 1/4" size, but you can use the size you like.
2 pin backs
Sharp craft knife
Acrylic paints in Easter colours
Small paintbrushes (liners and round)
Acrylic medium (glossy)
Water to rinse brushes
Googlie eyes if making bunny (I used pink 12mm eyes)
Scraps of white fun foam for bunny ears
Scraps of ribbon for bunny bow
Glue Gun

Note: I was able to get the styrofoam eggs at the dollar store, 12 in a pack for a buck, and the paints and brushes also $1.00 each.

This is what you will be making:
Easter Egg and bunny pins

Instructions:
If doing this craft with young children, an adult should do steps 1 and 2

Step 1
Cut your egg in half vertically with the craft knife, so that you end up with 2 eggs with a flat back. You may need to trim off the styrofoam on the back a wee bit to make it flat.

Step 2
With the hot glue gun, run a strip of glue down the center back of the egg and push the pin back onto the egg. Allow the glue to set.
It will look somthing like this:

Now the kiddies can take over. ^_^

To make the Easter Eggs:
Step 3
Choose a background colour from your paints and paint the entire front of your egg.
If the paint is very light, you may need to do 2 coats.

Step 4
Decorate your egg using your imagination and your paints.

Step 5
When the paint is dry (acrylic paint is very fast drying as long as it is not on too thick) take a clean brush and brush a very light coat of the Acrylic Medium over top for a nice smooth and shiny finish.

To make the Bunny Pin

Follow Steps 1 and 2 for Eggs, then go on to the following...

Step 3
Paint white acrylic over the entire front of the egg and let dry.

Step 4
Have an adult glue the eyes on the bunny with the hot glue gun.

Step 5
Paint on the bunny's face

Step 6
Cut out bunny ears from the fun foam and glue them in place. (You can have an adult use the hot glue gun again)

Step 7
With the scrap of ribbon, make a small bow and have an adult glue the bow at the neck of the bunny (like a bow-tie) with the hot glue gun.

That's it! All done! These Easter Eggs and Bunnies make great gifts for moms, grandmas, favourite aunts or a teacher!

Have fun making them, and don't forget to post a picture of your finished craft in the Guest Book!
